What to look for to avoid getting ripped off when getting your transmission repaired.

Most everyone knows that when it comes to expensive car or truck repairs, getting the automatic transmission repaired is one of the most costly with a typical quote of $2,000 or more. That makes it super important to find a shop that provides quality repairs and still charges a fair price. But how do you find that shop? Here’s a few things we recommend that help you avoid a less than reputable shop.

First, ask your friends or family members if they know of a shop where they were treated professionally and were satisfied with the work.

Second, avoid getting a over the phone estimate. Think about it. How can they give you an accurate estimate without seeing the vehicle? If the estimate is low, it is likely they are giving you a low estimate in order to get you into their shop. Shops like that almost always increase the price once you get to their shop.

Third, take a look around once you get to a shop. Does it have a professional appearance? A clean, organized repair shop is demonstrating qualities that carry over to the repair work itself. Pride in their shop usually means pride in their work which benefits you.

Fourth, ask for a detailed, written estimate of your repair. Once they looked at your car, they will have a good idea of what it will take to fix it. The written estimate should specify what’s wrong and the cost of parts and labor to repair it.

Finally, look to see if the shop is a member in consumer organizations. A reputable shop belongs to an organization or association that provides consumer arbitration in the event of a dispute. We belong to the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association which offers us those same services.
